Why Product Discovery Is Broken (And What I Built to Fix It)

Every product team says they do discovery. Most of them are guessing.

I have watched smart, capable product managers walk into customer conversations with a list of questions they wrote in five minutes. They ask surface-level things. They confirm what they already believe. They come back with "validated learnings" that are really just confirmation bias wearing a sticky note.

This is not a skills problem. It is a process problem. Discovery requires four distinct cognitive modes, and most teams collapse them into one: "talk to customers." That shortcut costs real money. It leads to features built on assumptions nobody tested, requirements nobody questioned, and pivot decisions made on vibes instead of evidence.

I built CORE because I got tired of watching that happen.

What CORE actually is

CORE stands for Capture, Orient, Refine, Execute. It is a four-phase methodology wrapped in an AI-powered platform that coaches practitioners through structured discovery sessions.

The key insight is that discovery has phases, and each phase demands a different kind of thinking:

Capture is about lowering the barrier to entry. Dump everything in: meeting notes, transcript snippets, gut feelings, half-formed observations. No judgment, no structure. The goal is quantity and honesty. If the tool demands structured input before you start, people skip it and go straight to building.

Orient is where raw data becomes insight. What patterns are hiding in the mess? What did the customer say that contradicts your assumptions? Orient uses AI as a second pair of eyes that catches what human attention tends to skip. It surfaces themes, identifies gaps, and creates the structured output that the next phase needs.

Refine is the phase that saves money. Are those patterns real, or did your brain connect dots that do not exist? Refine generates questions that stress-test your Orient conclusions. One well-targeted follow-up question here can prevent a quarter of wasted engineering work.

Execute translates validated insights into action. Quick wins, blockers, handoff packages. Discovery without action is research. Execute bridges the gap between "we learned something" and "here is what we build next."

Why four phases matter

Combining these modes is how discovery goes wrong. When a PM interviews a customer while simultaneously trying to pattern-match and plan next steps, all three activities suffer. The interview gets shallow because the PM is distracted by interpretation. The analysis gets biased because it is happening in real time with incomplete data. The planning gets premature because assumptions have not been tested.

CORE separates these modes on purpose. You do one thing at a time. The platform carries your context forward so you do not lose anything in the transition. Evidence captured in phase one pre-populates phase two. Problem statements built in phase two feed phase three. Validated assumptions in phase three shape phase four.

The result is a traceable evidence chain from raw observation to prioritized action. Every decision has a paper trail. Every assumption was tested. Every follow-up question was purpose-built for the specific gap it was designed to fill.

Who this is for

CORE was designed with three audiences in mind.

New product managers get a coach. Instead of figuring out what to ask through trial and error over six months, they get phase-appropriate questions generated from their specific context. The AI does not replace their judgment; it gives them a starting point that would take years of experience to develop on their own.

Experienced practitioners get a system that matches their pace. They already know how to do discovery, but they do it in their heads. CORE externalizes that thinking, makes it auditable, and makes it shareable. When a senior PM moves on, the institutional knowledge stays instead of leaving with them.

Teams get consistency. When five people run discovery five different ways, outcomes are unpredictable. CORE gives the team a shared vocabulary and a shared process without being rigid. The phases guide but do not gate. You can skip ahead, revisit, or work out of order if the situation calls for it.

What makes this different from a blank doc and ChatGPT

You could paste a transcript into any LLM and ask for insights. People do. The results are generic because the LLM has no context about your discovery state, your evidence history, or what phase of the engagement you are in.

CORE maintains session continuity. It knows what evidence you have already gathered, what themes emerged in Orient, what assumptions are still untested in Refine. Every AI interaction builds on the accumulated context. The fifth question generation in a session is dramatically more targeted than the first.

The platform also handles the tedious infrastructure: evidence linking, confidence scoring, cross-phase data flow, transcript parsing, multi-format document ingestion, and export. You focus on the discovery work. CORE handles the bookkeeping.
